Meeting Christ in the Liturgy: Sunday 29B: "let us hold fast to our ...

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Many families endure the phenomenon of the child comes home only for meals, or for laundry or other physical necessities.? Some see their children come home unexpectedly after college while facing unavailability of work.

This certainly satisfies need for physical sustenance and, although a limited opportunity for interrelationships, is ultimately not enough to satisfy the need for human flourishing.? Why?? Because relationships are about love and love is about growth and growth is about not being satisfied with the minimum.? So sooner or later something has to give: eventually ?persons drift out of relationships because the minimalistic approach is tolerated until it becomes merely an inconvenience to be avoided or the truth is faced and steps are taken to address the dysfunction and matters begin to improve as persons become more generous with their time.

It is true that the Sacrifice of the Mass is the one essential thing: Christ Present in Word proclaimed and really, truly in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

But it is not the only thing.

In the Gospel the Apostles make demands upon Jesus: "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."? Their relationship is tending toward the physical, the utilitarian, much like te son or daughter whose actions tend to reduce the relationship with family members to the satisfaction of physical needs only.

Faith is about what God does for us.? But it is also about what we do for God: grace builds on nature.? So God redirects our attention to the choices we make, the way in which our lives are lived in preparation, readiness for His grace we desire:

?Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.?

?Thus, if we desire to have Him moving in our lives we must take the first step so that grace can build on nature: we attend Mass weekly in obedience to the Commandments but moreso that we may grow in our relationship.? Mass, although the greatest and necessary gift, remains a minimum, conformity with His command while seeking to grow in our capacity to please God in other ways.?? More is needed.

1.???? ?Daily prayer.

2.???? Scripture reading / study of teachings (CCC)

3.???? Service of others to see and love Christ in them (family, co-workers, the other in distressing disguise)

4.???? Seeking more than the minimum: personal prayer through visits to the Blessed Sacrament, daily Mass, stations during Lent, special liturgies such as Corpus Christi procession and May devotions.

5.???? Regular confession, especially in case of mortal sin before receiving the Eucharist.

?? let us hold fast to our confession ? ? with Sunday Mass is the source of our spiritual life throughout the week and the summit toward which all our activities tend (Vatican II, Sacrosanctum Concilium)

?So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.?

Canada may have to downgrade growth forecasts: Flaherty

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada may have to downgrade its economic and fiscal forecasts to take into account the European debt crisis and the choppy U.S. recovery, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Thursday.

In the government's fall fiscal update due in the coming weeks, Flaherty will update the outlook for the federal budget deficit, based on the average growth forecast of private sector experts whom the government consults regularly.

"We expected moderate growth, the economists in Canada told us to anticipate moderate growth and as you know, we follow the recommendations (of) the average of a group of private sector economists," Flaherty told reporters.

"We're watching closely ... we may have to revise downward somewhat, but so far, we're in the same ball park as we anticipated in the federal budget," he said.

The 2012 budget presented in March envisions growth of 2.1 percent for this year and 2.4 percent next year.

The International Monetary Fund this month lowered its outlook for Canada to 1.9 percent growth this year and 2.0 percent in 2013.

And a recent Reuters poll of more than 20 economists found they expect Canadian growth of just 2 percent this year and next.

Ottawa has also been predicting the fiscal deficit will narrow gradually and return to a small surplus in 2015/16.

Lower growth could weaken government revenues and potentially delay the return to balanced books, although Flaherty maintains that it will happen in "the medium term."

PENSIONS TARGETED

The Conservative government is also taking steps on the spending side. It outlined major reforms to public sector pensions in broad-ranging legislation introduced to Parliament on Thursday to push through measures first announced in the budget.

The pension changes will save the government C$2.6 billion ($2.7 billion) over five years, said Tony Clement, who oversees spending cuts in the federal bureaucracy as president of the Treasury Board.

The retirement age for politicians and new hires in the public sector workers will rise to 65 from 55, and both will be responsible for 50 percent of pension contributions, bringing them more in line with private sector practices.

"We are paying our fair share, we believe public servants should pay their fair share," said Clement.

Elected members of Parliament won't be subject to the full brunt of the changes until after the next election in 2016, while civil servants will have to comply as of 2013.

The budget legislation also extends a tax credit for small businesses, phases out a tax credit for mining exploration and development and revamps the country's system of tax incentives for business research and development.

The opposition New Democratic Party criticized the Conservatives for cramming so many measures into the 450-page document and said more of the tax measures should be linked to job creation.

"Part of the problem with the approach of this government is they lurch from budget to budget and it doesn't give business the kind of predictability they need," said Peggy Nash, the NDP's spokeswoman on finance.

Binders full of funny: Romney meme spurs joke Amazon reviews

FeaturePics.com

By Rosa Golijan

"There are some problems with this binder," complains Ruth from New Hampshire. "First, there are no women in it."

A remark made by?Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during Tuesday's debate brought us a meme that just keeps on giving. There are tweets, there's a dedicated Tumblr, there are so many silly images that seeing them all would take until the next election cycle. And now there are appropriately themed?? and oh-so-hilarious?? Amazon reviews.

Related: 'Binders Full of Women,' other Internet memes trump voter issues

This isn't the first time we've seen Internet jokesters take to the online retailer's pages to mock a product, person or brand, of course. Most recently, for example, a writing instrument specifically marketed to the fairer sex was the target of online snark.?Unlike that bit of silliness, the latest attack on Amazon reviews isn't limited to one single product though. Instead, tongue-in-cheek reviews are appearing on a variety of binder related products.

"I used to think women were beyond organization till I discovered these binders," writes Martha H. Saltzman about an?Avery Durable View Binder (with 2 Inch EZ-Turn Ring).?"Now those pesky women are lined up, organized and orderly."

"The binders are very sturdy so the women didn't fall out or get wrinkled," Willard from Massachusetts says about a?TOPS Cardinal XtraValue D-Ring Binder.

"Warning: these binders only fit one woman, not multiple," cautions a user named Mari in a review of a?Filexec 3 Ring Binder.

Not every one is giggling along with the silly reviews though. Someone posting under the username "Intelligent Woman" is a bit annoyed, for example: "These political statements are simply ridiculous! This is a place for reviews of the product, not your political opinions. You people nit-pick at every tiny little thing."

Shift.com: Social Ad Startup GraphEffect Tries To Create A More Productive LinkedIn

grapheffect shiftGraphEffect, a startup that until now has focused on social media advertising, is launching a new collaboration platform today called Shift.com. CEO James Borow said Shift.com emerged from the GraphEffect team's frustrating experiences trying to collaborate with other organizations, something that was "amplified by the struggles we saw on the marketing agency side." (After all, there are usually multiple companies working together on an ad campaign.) At the same time, he argued that Shift.com shouldn't just be useful for marketers, but instead serve as a much broader platform for business collaboration.

Texas to execute man who killed police officer in 1998

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A man who shot to death a Houston police officer in 1998 is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Thursday in Texas.

Anthony Haynes, 33, would be the 11th inmate executed this year in Texas and the 33rd in the United States, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. The execution is scheduled for after 6 p.m. (2300 GMT) in Huntsville.

Haynes fired a shot from his truck at a Jeep Cherokee carrying off-duty Houston police officer Kent Kincaid and his wife, Nancy, according to an account of the case from the Texas attorney general's office.

The officer got out of his Jeep and approached Haynes' truck, telling him that he was a police officer and asking to see his driver's license, the account said.

Nancy Kincaid said during Haynes' trial that her husband was reaching for his badge when the driver shot him in the head, according to a Houston Chronicle account at the time.

"(The driver) pulled his hand up and I saw the flash and I heard the pop," Nancy Kincaid testified. "That was the end. He then went down."

Kent Kincaid was declared brain-dead at the hospital.

That same night, Haynes had committed several armed robberies, Texas officials say.

"I'm not a vicious psychopath who goes around wanting to take people's lives," Haynes told the Houston Chronicle in a 2001 death row interview. "There was no intent to kill a cop. He did not ID himself until a second before I shot him."

Haynes has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, raising questions about whether his trial lawyers were effective.

How to Prepare a Travel Checklist?

One of the most important aspects of traveling is to prepare a checklist and keep it handy. It may consist of things from ?must haves? to ?hardly necessary? ones. When traveling alone or with family, a variety of things may need to be taken along. While traveling abroad, the checklist would be an extensive one, as it will involve a lot of paperwork as well. Adventure travel to leisure travel, a checklist is a must. And one must always remember that the contents of your baggage for various trips will be very different, depending on where you are headed to, who you are traveling with, how you are traveling, etc.

Why is a checklist so important?
Planning a trip and turning it into a perfect one are two separate things. A checklist ensures that the latter does take place. A perfect trip could be spoilt if you forgot something back home, such as a digital camera. How wretched would you feel if you realized you forgot your favorite hat on your trip to a beach, or forgot your passports home, only to realize the same at the airport? Many elements exist which can make a perfect trip fall apart, and a checklist ensures that such elements are eradicated, so that you don?t forget anything behind which you may later regret or miss. Thus, here are a few tips on how to prepare a travel checklist.

1. Travel checklist for a leisure trip

A leisure trip is one which a person undertakes along with his family or loved ones, to explore a new region and its culture or just for relaxation. Packing for such a trip is easiest of all but requires a lot of paperwork, which needs to be handled carefully. Things that come first are the necessary items, which consist of airline tickets, passports, visas, vaccination certificates, currency (domestic and foreign), hotel confirmations, itinerary, travelers checks, emergency phone numbers, first aid kit, medication, etc. These are extremely critical. The secondary items on a checklist for a leisure trip involve extra clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment, binoculars, entertainment gadgets like iPods and MP3s, etc. Both necessary and secondary items must feature on your checklist and on the basis of the capacity of luggage you can carry, you must eliminate some items from them later on.

2. Travel checklist for an adventure checklist

It could be slightly tricky when packing and preparing a checklist for an adventure trip. Unlike a leisure trip, at an adventure trip your checklist must feature those elements or things you will require for living comfortably, because one does not stay in hotels during camping expeditions. Apart from the paper work, your checklist should consist of things that you don?t usually require in your day-to-day life, but will definitely need during camping or trekking.

The primary items on your checklist will consist of airline tickets, passports, visas, vaccination certificates, currency (domestic and foreign), a complete and extensive first aid kit, survival kit consisting of Swiss knife, compass, ropes, maps, torches, match boxes, scissors, sleeping bags, haversacks and backpacks with tightly sewn straps, good tough shoes, insect repellent creams, protein bars, water bottles, etc. The secondary items on your checklist will include extra clothing, electronic gadgets, junk food and chocolates, extra pair of footwear, etc. The key to going for an adventure trip is to travel light, so the smaller the checklist, the better it is.

At Preakness, Motion is the hunter, not the target

The same team who won last year's Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom only to finish a half-length behind Shackleford in the Preakness is confident their Spiral Stakes winner is ready to win a Classic. (AP Photo/Tom Uhlman, File)

(AP) ? A year ago, Graham Motion was one of the most popular figures at Pimlico Race Course.

As the trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, Motion had the lone horse in the Preakness field with a shot at winning the Triple Crown.

"The pressure is on you," the Englishman recalled Thursday. "The two weeks between the Derby and the Preakness, I felt like I was holding my breath. You're kind of walking on egg shells, hoping everything is going great with the horse."

Animal Kingdom came in second in the 2011 Preakness, a half-length behind Shackleford. Motion can't get the outcome out of his mind ? no matter how hard he tries.

"We came that close," Motion said, holding his index finger and thumb a half-inch apart. "I was quite shocked to see Shackleford's picture on the grandstand when I drove in this morning. That was kind of a pit in my stomach."

Motion will saddle Went the Day Well in the Preakness on Saturday. The bay colt finished fourth in the Derby two weeks ago but has won two of his four starts this year.

Went the Day Well was bumped at Churchill Downs and forced to go seven wide in an effort to catch up. He rallied gamely under jockey John Velazquez, but couldn't quite make up enough ground to finish in the money.

"He ended up much farther back than Johnny wanted in the Derby, and that's probably what cost him being second. Maybe cost him the win," Motion said. "It's all about getting a good trip. There's always going to be a horse in the Derby that doesn't get a good trip, and that's what makes it so hard to win the Triple Crown."

If Motion has his way, horse racing will go another year without a Triple Crown winner. I'll Have Another has assumed the role held by Animal Kingdom last year, and Motion is determined to deny the Derby winner from making it two in a row.

"We're going to try our best to make sure it doesn't happen," Motion said. "We're going to make it hard for him. Let's put it that way."

Motion has been operating in relative obscurity this week while I'll Have Another trainer Doug O'Neill and Bob Baffert, trainer of Preakness favorite Bodemeister, are attracting much of the attention.

"I'm more comfortable being under the radar," Motion said.

He did, however, acknowledge that last year was far more exciting.

"You come to the Preakness with the Derby winner, that's pretty cool. It doesn't get any better than that," he said. "I'm more relaxed about it because the Triple Crown is over for us."

Barry Irwin heads the syndicate that owns Went the Day Well. That same syndicate owned Animal Kingdom, so Irwin can certainly sympathize with the way Motion is feeling this week.

"It was not fun," Irwin said. "But the horse, he just got too far back. ... Sure, I'd liked to have won, but he ran second. He ran a good race. I was happy. I was proud of him."

Irwin is excited about Saturday's race, but nothing can duplicate the feeling had before last year's Preakness.

"It's more intense because you know everybody's concentrating on it and focusing on it," he said. "It's not just me and my partners, it's everybody. So that adds a layer of tension to it."

Irwin hopes Bodemeister and I'll Have Another get into a speed duel and fade toward the finish of the 1 3/16th mile race, providing Went the Day Well the opportunity to swoop in and steal a victory.

"In the best of all possible worlds, I think Bodemeister, that Derby race has got to tell something on him," Irwin said. "You can't run as fast and as hard as he did and not have it affect you. I'll Have Another, if he wants to win the Triple Crown or win the Preakness, the onus is on him to go after Bodemeister. And if both those things happen, and my horse breaks cleanly, I hopefully will be the beneficiary."
