Apple debuts new, more detailed status page for iCloud and other services

As those affected by recent iMessage outages no doubt noticed, Apple's status page for its various services hasn't exactly been the most detailed around. That's changed a bit today, however, with the company rolling out a new page that promise to offer a better look at what's working and what's not across iCloud, iTunes and Apple's other services. As you can see above, that includes a grid that provides a quick look at any outages currently occurring, below which is a more detailed timeline that lets you look back at any past outages and how long they lasted.

Video: Top stories that had women talking in 2012

>>> the economy, hurricane sandy and the presidential campaign were all big conversation starters this year. what were the top stories that had women talking? ivillage.com has been keeping track and chief correspondent ankle kelly wallace is here with the results.

>> good morning to you.

>> good morning. let's start with number five, that controversial breast feed ing cover on "time" magazine.

>> oh, my god, women were talking about this. women who said oh, my goodness, that's too old.

>> how old is too old?

>> this is a champion for breastfeeding. others thought maybe even if they support breast feeding this isn't the way to go to get support. people are so passionate about it, for or against.

>> number four, a book that got a lot of attention even at the white house apparently. michelle obama talked about t"the fifthy shades of grey" phenom.

>> you know, not having read it, it's hard to know exactly what's going on.

>> right.

>> it's obviously tapped into something and given people permission to explore parts of themselves that maybe felt a bit taboo.

>> i mean, hello, even the first lady is talking about it. it is something that sparked more conversation in the bedroom.

>> that's true. number three involved comments about rape by those two senate candidates, todd akien and richard mourdock . whitney houston 's death.

>> loss of a talent but also mourning the loss of this woman who now is leaving behind a daughter who no longer has a mother.

>> number one was same-sex marriage.

>> something everyone is talking about. women seem to be leading the charge. more women than men support same-sex marriage and helping to pass ballot measures legalizing same-sex marriage.

>> kelly wallace, more on ivillage.com.

Redbox Instant headed to iOS, Android, many other devices; costs $8 per month for streaming and discs

Redbox Instant is almost here, and when it arrives sometime in early 2013, it'll cost around $8. Redbox announced pricing for its disc + streaming package this morning, pinning an $8 monthly charge to unlimited streaming, as well as access to four free one-night disc rentals at any Redbox kiosk ($9 a month turns those four discs into Blu-ray releases, magically). The service seeks to undermine streaming's 800 pound gorilla, Netflix, by undercutting its service offering -- Netflix's base streaming-only package starts at $8, whereas Redbox offers four disc rentals as well for the same price.

Redbox also announced that its instant service will head to Samsung-manufactured Blu-ray players and SmartHub TVs, as well as LG's Blu-ray players / Smart TVs, as well as Google TV devices. No word is given on the previously leaked Xbox 360 player, but we expect to hear more on that as Redbox Instant rolls out on an invitation-only basis later this month.

Is Susan Rice the next Robert Bork?

By Chris Wilson

For someone who hasn?t been nominated for anything recently, United Nations ambassador Susan Rice seems to be running into an awful lot of confirmation trouble.

Rice has been widely discussed as a potential successor to Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, a prospect that has come under assault from multiple flanks.

Prominent Senate Republicans launched a preemptive strike on the idea of a Rice nomination in November, saying she had misled the public by casting the assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi as a mob response to an inflammatory anti-Islam video rather than a terrorist attack, as it was later proven to be. Nearly 100 House Republicans helpfully added their support to that cause, even though the House of Representatives has nothing to do with confirming presidential nominations.

In Monday?s New York Times, Rice enjoyed the distinction of unflattering coverage from both ends of the A section. In the news pages, a story dissected Rice?s support for Rwandan president Paul Kagame, whom many blame for escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On the opinion pages, an Eritrean-American journalist called on President Barack Obama to nominate someone else based on Rice?s support for the late Ethiopian autocrat Meles Zenawi.

Nominating candidates to high-profile government posts is one of the most politically exposed responsibilities of the presidency, and bringing down a nominee is an easy way for a political rival to ding a new or newly reelected president. Should Obama nominate Rice to replace Clinton, she could join Robert Bork and Harriet Miers in the pantheon of two-term presidents? botched nominations.

I built a database of all civilian presidential nominations in the Library of Congress?s legislative depot, which has searchable info on nominations going back to the 100th Congress, the last of President Ronald Reagan?s tenure.

Presidents are responsible for nominating a huge number of positions, from the chief justice of the Supreme Court to members of the National Museum and Library Services Board. That means the Senate receives between about 700 and 1,400 nominations each session to approve. I limited my investigation to a president?s most prominent nominations: Cabinet secretaries, Supreme Court justices, federal appeals judges, and United States attorneys.

In the following interactive, you can see how those nominations fared in each session of the Senate. The nominations are divided by type on the left and by result on the right.

The Senate rarely rejects nominations. Instead, they typically die one of two ways: The president could decide the nomination is a lost cause and withdraw it, as President George W. Bush did with Miers, who was cast as too inexperienced by some senators and insufficiently conservative by many Republicans.

The Senate can also refuse to put the president?s nomination to a vote. In this case, Senate rules hold that the nomination is dead in the water and must be resubmitted in the next session.

But some nominees have faced outright rejection by the Senate.

They include Robert Bork, a conservative federal appeals court judge Reagan nominated to the Supreme Court in 1987, who was voted down by the Democratic-controlled Senate by margin of 58-42.

John Tower, the former Republican senator from Texas whom President George H. W. Bush tapped for secretary of defense in 1989, was rejected by a margin of 53-47 amid allegations of Tower?s alcohol abuse and womanizing.? It was the first time the Senate had rejected a newly elected president?s Cabinet nominee. ?

But Tower at least survived without having his name turned into a verb for political rejection.

How nominations fare has a lot to do with whether the president?s party controls the Senate.

President Bill Clinton, who had a Democratic House and Senate during his first two years in office in 1993-94, had only five major nominations returned without a verdict during that period. Clinton also withdrew his nomination of Zoe Baird to be attorney general amid evidence she had hired illegal immigrants to work as household help.

Democrats lost both chambers of Congress in the 1994 midterm elections, and the Republican Senate that followed confirmed only about half of Clinton?s major nominations.

Obama may be the first president since Franklin Roosevelt to serve two full terms with a Senate controlled by his own party, given that Republicans presently face an uphill battle to retake the upper chamber in 2014. Even with that buffer, the potential for a Rice confirmation may already be in jeopardy, if for no other reason than that the opposition senses the opportunity for a political victory.

Apple Australia map glitch: Snakes! In the desert!

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian police have warned travellers off using Apple's troubled iPhone mapping software after several motorists became stuck in a snake-infested, desert corner of the country while using their phone for directions.

Police in southeast Victoria state said they had been forced to rescue a number of motorists who had become stuck for up to 24 hours "without food or water" after being directed to the arid Murray Sunset National Park, instead of the tourist town of Mildura, 70 km (43 miles) away.

"We had a fellow trapped in there just on Friday night after his car became bogged. He saw a snake, a goat and a fox, and he was too scared to get out of the car," Mildura police Inspector Simon Clemence told Reuters on Tuesday.

The Murray-Sunset National Park is in Victoria's far northwest, a relatively untouched semi-arid region accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Clemence said at least six vehicles had become stuck on the desert park's sandy tracks after being directed by the iOS mapping system to turn off a long and infrequently sign-posted stretch of highway between South Australia state and Victoria.

"These people have still been rescuable. But we've just had a 46C day (115 degrees F). If they were out there in that temperature and out of phone range, they would have been in serious trouble," he said.

Clemence said police had contacted Apple over the issue. But while the world's most valuable company had now rectified Mildura's location for people travelling from South Australia, motorists seeking directions from Melbourne city were still being directed off course by iOS.

"If you punch in Melbourne to Mildura, it still puts you in the middle of the park," he said. "So they've got it half right."

Police said people should not blindly rely on technology to get them to their location, although in fairness he said people could easily become misdirected over long stretches of road along the 377-km Mallee Highway.

"There's nothing to signpost, and people are just driving and driving when their GPS phone suddenly says turn," Clemence said.

"But anyone who has used a GPS would know, they all make mistakes. You have to use your common sense and your eyes, and if it doesn't look right, then it probably isn't right."

Apple's chief executive Tim Cook apologized to customers in September for problems with the new mobile mapping application and suggested they use a rival product from Google until the multitude of errors could be ironed out.

Apple also sacked the executive behind the mapping software, and handed responsibility for hardware and software design to the company's industrial design guru Jonathan Ive.

Romney's '47 percent' chosen as year's best quote

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's comments about 47 percent of the population dependent on the government and "binders full of women" topped this year's best quotes, according to a Yale University librarian.

Fred Shapiro, associate librarian at Yale Law School, released his seventh annual list of the most notable quotations of the year.

"Debate remarks and gaffes actually seemed to play an important role in the ups and downs of the election campaign and may even have affected the ultimate outcome of the election," Shapiro said.

Romney, who lost the November election to President Barack Obama, made the 47 percent comment at a private fundraiser in May that was secretly recorded and posted online in September by Mother Jones magazine.

[Related: His ironic approval rating]

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what ... who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims. ... These are people who pay no income tax. ... and so my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives," Romney said.

Romney spoke about reviewing "binders full of women" as governor when he sought to diversify his Massachusetts administration.

"It contributed to an image of him as being somewhat out of touch and maybe particularly out of touch with issues related to women," Shapiro said.

Obama made the list, too, for his "you didn't build that" comment, his contention that people who built businesses had help, from teachers, family and other supporters ? and sometimes the government.

[Related: Romney's election night phone call to Obama]

"It was probably the leading line that Obama wished he hadn't made during this year," Shapiro said.

Obama's "horses and bayonets" debate rebuke of Romney in an exchange over the size of the Navy also made the list.

The original "Yale Book of Quotations" was published in 2006, and Shapiro has updated it with an annual list of the top 10 quotes. Shapiro picks quotes that are famous, important or revealing of the spirit of the times, not necessarily ones that are the most eloquent or admirable.

Here's the list:

1.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what ... who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims. ... These are people who pay no income tax. ... and so my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Mitt Romney, remarks at private fundraiser, Boca Raton, Fla., May 17

2.

"We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet (in Massachusetts). I went to a number of women's groups and said, "Can you help us find folks?" and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Mitt Romney, second presidential debate, Hempstead, N.Y., Oct. 16

3.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business ? you didn't build that."

Barack Obama, remarks at campaign appearance, Roanoke, Va., July 13

4.

"Please proceed, Governor."

Obama, second presidential debate, Hempstead, N.Y., Oct. 16 (lead-in to Romney's denial that Obama had called Libya attack an act of terrorism)

5.

"You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."

Obama, third presidential debate, Boca Raton, Fla., Oct. 22

6.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Missouri senatorial candidate Todd Akin, KTVI-TV interview, Aug. 19

7.

"You hit a reset button for the fall campaign; everything changes. It's almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again."

Romney senior campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstrom, CNN interview, March 21

8.

"I'm an honorary consul general, so I have inviolability."

Socialite Jill Kelley, telephone call to a 911 dispatcher, Tampa, Fla., Nov. 11, about media crews that came to her home as news broke of her involvement in the scandal over the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus

9.

"Oppan Gangnam style."

South Korean rapper PSY, "Gangnam Style" (song)

10 (tie)

"Under current law, on January 1st, 2013, there is going to be a massive fiscal cliff of large spending cuts and tax increases."

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, testimony at House Committee on Financial Services hearing, Feb. 29

10 (tie)

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge."

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, WMAZ-TV television interview about Taxpayer Protection Pledge, Nov. 21

10 (tie)

"I have a job to do. ... If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don't know me."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Fox News interview about Hurricane Sandy, Oct. 30
